Abstract

Social media have grown unexpectedly and become essential aspects of many individuals’ lives. However, they have also emerged as a primary platform for identity deception. Over the past few decades, cybercrime involving fake profiles has risen significantly. Recent studies have been conducted to prevent and detect such identity deception. This survey presents various deception techniques explored by researchers, including fake profiles, profile cloning, fake news, and fabricated identities. It offers a comprehensive review of social media identity deception detection strategies and highlights key research areas to enhance user safety on social networks. This survey is anticipated to benefit both researchers and social media service providers.
